Brisbane based event agency Nectar Creative Communications has won Small Event Management Organisation of the Year at the 2021 Australian Event Awards, a national awards program for the events industry.
Nectar Creative Communications are connection and engagement experts across live, hybrid and virtual events. They specialise in curating events which drive behaviour change and tangible outcomes for organisations, businesses and associations.
Entries for the Small Event Management Organisation of the Year were judged on a number of aspects including innovation, best practice and sustainability as well as each nominee’s contribution to events and the difficulties encountered in executing them during such a difficult year.
In their awards submission, Nectar detailed their “pivot to online” where they chose to use their unscheduled “downtime” creatively. Peta Moore, Managing Director, completed the PCMA Digital Event Strategy course to be able to guide the team on best practice for virtual and hybrid. As EventsAIR users, Nectar were early adopters of the OnAIR platform, attending all the test events and training sessions. The team completed the certification in OnAIR.
When the events industry suddenly shut down in March 2020, the team curated a series of short Q&A’s with current and former clients, speakers and industry gurus. The 3-minute series were formulated as a “check-in” chat to discuss what was happening for their industry and what they felt may change post COVID-19. The team also created a number of Thought Sharing Sessions on topics related to the events industry.
They embraced all things digital and explored options for their clients, knowing that creating any memorable audience experiences and tangible outcomes involves a clear strategy, good storytelling and flawless execution. They took time to retrain, reposition and truly understand the benefits of virtual events, sharing their knowledge via a series of vlogs along the way.
The Nectar team also held a number of virtual and hybrid events for which they were praised by the judging panel of the Australian Event Awards. “The overall number and quality of the entries we received in 2021 really depicts the strength and resilience of our changing industry, and the collective drive we have to succeed in the face of adversity.” Peter Rix AM, Co-Chair of the Judging Panel.
This focus and dedication has paid off, and the Nectar team have been busy delivering a variety of events from multi-stream, multi-day virtual to hybrid with global reach to bespoke in person events driving social outcomes. As such 2021 has seen business growth for the Brisbane based agency in the face of travel restrictions and uncertainty in the market.

About the 2021 Australian Event Awards
In a perhaps unusual move, the 2021 Australian Event Awards Ceremony moved online in the face of Covid-19 lockdowns across the country. Instead of a one-night virtual Awards Ceremony, the Awards decided to make October a month-long celebration of their entrants, finalists, and winners. The first half of October saw highlights of every Awards entrant, their achievements since 1 July 2020 and recognition of the individuals that were integral to the operation posted to the Awards social media. Over the second half of October, the winner and finalist announcements were delivered as a series of bite sized broadcasts published on their YouTube channel each evening. The month-long Industry celebration was a huge success, recognising a range of the individuals and organisations in the industry and what they have been able to achieve despite Covid-19.
